ISN CHALLENGE 2009

This programme started at the end of 2008 and has had th Physical inactivity is major health problem in Malaysia with 60% of the adult population classified as inactive. Physical inactivity is associated with an increased risk of a number of chronic diseases and health conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, certain cancers, obesity and premature death. Institut Sukan Negara (ISN) is the premier institute of high performance sport in Malaysia thus it is important that ISN staff set a good example through following an active lifestyle. This programme is focused on ensuring ISN staff ‘walk the talk’ and set a good example by regularly participating in physical activity. ISN can then become a model for other government departments and non-government agencies.

A total of 207 staff (86%) took part in Phase I of the Challenge – determination of activity levels using the Omron pedometer


In addition height and weight measurement were taken





To calibrate the pedometer, step length was determined


In addition, staff completed questionnaires to determine their attitudes and barriers towards activity, an assessment of their lifestyles and the degree to which the work environment facilitates an active lifestyle.

The second phase of the Challenge is an intervention programme that is currently being developed on the basis of the information obtained as part of Phase I.
